We at the Welcome Project were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of Jim Green after a long illness. Jim was a longtime generous supporter of the Welcome Project. He served as a board member from 2000 to 2009 and as Chair of the Board from 2005 to 2009.

He was a Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Boston from 1977 until he retired in 2014. A celebrated labor historian, Jim authored many books and articles including (2006) Death in the Haymarket: A Story of Chicago, the First Labor Movement and the Bombing That Divided Gilded Age America (New York: Pantheon Books). His most recent book (2015) The Devil is Here in These Hills: West Virginia's Coal Miners and Their Battle for Freedom (New York: Grove Atlantic) is also the subject of a documentary film.

We will miss him and we hold his family in our thoughts. The family welcomes visitors at 72 Mt. Vernon St. in Somerville on June 30 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at an as yet undetermined future time.
